ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Wyoming men's and women's Distance Medley Relay teams each posted times within the top-four in program history on Thursday, highlighting the Pokes' first day of competition at the 2018 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The Cowgirl DMR team was composed of junior
Emily Person, senior
Melina Harris, senior
Kerry White and senior
Lauren Hamilton. The foursome clocked an altitude-adjusted time of 11 minutes, 40.18 seconds, good enough for third on the UW all-time list for the event behind DMR teams from the 2016 and 2017 conference championship meets. Person ran the 1,200-meter portion of the race then handed the baton to Harris for the 400-meter leg, while White followed with the 800-meter leg and Hamilton served as the anchor and ran the mile.
The Cowgirls placed sixth in a stacked field on Thursday, as Boise State won the relay title by demolishing the Mountain West Championship record with a raw time of 11:05.39. New Mexico was second at 11:07.88. The Broncos and Lobos now have the top two women's DMR times in the NCAA this season.
Meanwhile, the Cowboy DMR squad of redshirt freshman
Harry Ewing (1,200 meters), freshman
Jacob Harthun (400 meters), senior
Calum Kepler (800 meters) and senior
Jonah Henry (mile) recorded an altitude-adjusted time of 9:57.11. It was the fastest time for a Cowboy DMR team since 2011 and ranks as the No. 4 time on the UW all-time list.
The Cowboys placed sixth overall in a record-breaking race, as DMR champion New Mexico clocked an altitude-adjusted time of 9:24.73 to unofficially break the men's NCAA Division I record for the event. Second-place Utah State recorded an altitude-adjusted time of 9:25.91, making the Aggies the No. 2 team in the nation for the event this season behind the Lobos.
