INDIO, Calif. (Dec. 21, 2018) – Cowgirl golfer
Erin Sargent finished up an impressive week competing against some of the nation's top male amateur golfers on Friday at the Men's Agave Amateur. Sargent finished tied for 43
rd in the field of 104.
"Overall, I played consistently over the three days but there was definitely room for improvement," Sargent said. "I have not played in a men's event before, so I went into the tournament with the same competitive mindset I normally have. I was out of my comfort zone which I felt like improved my mental toughness on the course. This was a great experience for me and it has me motivated and excited for the spring season."
The Cowgirl junior finished the event at 7-over for the tournament, carding a 2-over 73 for her final round which included a trio of birdies. Sargent recorded a 72 in Thursday's second round for her best score of the week, following a first-round 75.
"I'm very proud of Erin going out of her comfort zone and taking advantage of a great opportunity to improve her game," Cowgirl head coach
Josey Stender said. "She has set high goals for herself while being one of the top players in our conference and opportunities like this only add to her resume."
"Erin played great, and she's really competing," Wyoming Director of Golf
Joe Jensen said. "This has been and will be the most unique experience of her career. It was something I wanted her to experience, feeling the pressure and something so different than what she is used to. Regardless of her scores, I'm so proud of the way she is training and competing.
"On top of that, the purpose of us wanting to do this is giving her an experience that will hopefully move her career, her confidence, her skillset to the next level, and give her something that she can bring back to the team. I just want her to enjoy this experience this for her."
The Agave Amateur is held at Shadow Hills Golf Club, and is one of three tournaments included in the Troon Saguaro Amateur series. Other tournaments featured include the Gobbler Amateur (Nov. 18-21, 2018) and the Saguaro Amateur (Jan. 1-4, 2019).
The Troon Saguaro Amateur Series has a season long points race and the champion is crowned at the Saguaro Amateur. Each tournament, competitors are awarded points based on their performance. Players that participate in multiple events receive additional bonus points.
Sargent and the rest of the Cowgirls will return to the links as a team on Feb. 11, when they compete at the Battle at the Rock in Riverside, Calif.
