LARAMIE, WYO. (Nov. 7, 2018) – Wyoming women's swimming and diving will be on the road for a pair of road duals this weekend. The Cowgirls will take on Washington State on Friday followed by a match-up against the University of Idaho on Saturday.
The Cowgirls dropped their first dual of the season last time out with a 155-145 loss against Denver. The Cowgirls have a 4-1 record currently with wins against Northern Colorado, New Mexico State, Air Force and Colorado State.
"I think the ladies will have a pretty big challenge head to head in some of the races against Washington State," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "Idaho will present them an opportunity to swim some of their third, fourth and fifth events, but the way this team is coming together has been great. This will be the first time they are swimming together as a small group, so it will be interesting with the dynamic from 20 kids compared to 35."
The Cowgirls won seven of 16 events throughout the dual against Denver. In the 1000-yard freestyle,
Daniela Luna Rocha touched the wall in 10:25.57 to place first and
Talita Te Flan finished in second with a time of 10:40.97.
Lainee Jones and
Katelyn Blattner posted the top two time in the 200-yard freestyle with 1:52.44, a season-best, and 1:54.59, respectively. In the 200-yard backstroke,
Samantha Burke placed first with a time of 2:01.88. The Cowgirls swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle with Jones finishing first in 5:06.40, Luna Rocha touched second in 5:06.87 and Blattner with a third-place time of 5:09.66.
"Lainee (Jones) continues to be very reliable in the pool as a freshman," Denniston added. "Daniela (Luna Rocha) has come on strong in her distance events. Our upperclassmen with Isobel (Ryan) and Sam (Burke), we will look for their consistency in the pool."
Washington State is 3-3 overall and dropped a 158-95 contest against No. 5 California Bears program last time out. Prior to that, the Cougars picked up a pair of wins against Idaho and Northern Arizona. Against Idaho, WSU won 11 of 16 events in a 159-139 victory. The Cougars defeated Northern Arizona at home with a 135-126 win. Washington State was victorious in 10 of 14 events throughout the afternoon.
Idaho enters the meet with a 1-3 overall record this season. Last weekend, the Vandals earned its first win of the season with an impressive 251-41 victory over Seattle. The Cowgirls and Vandals will square off for the first time in each programs history.
