Tyler Vander Waal Named One of Eight Manning Award Stars of the Week

Fans May Vote Through Social Media Up Until Thursday at 10 a.m., M.T.

New Orleans, La. (Nov. 19, 2018) --  Wyoming redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Vander Waal has been named one of the eight Manning Award Stars of the Week for his performance in Wyoming's 35-27 win over Air Force last Saturday.  The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, allows college football fans to vote on to the Allstate Sugar Bowl social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for who they think had the best performance from this past weekend.  Voting closes on Thursday at 10 a.m., Mountain Time, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.

In the final five minutes of the game, Vander Waal, a redshirt freshman from Elk Grove, Calif., led Wyoming on three touchdown drives for one of the greatest comebacks in Wyoming history.  Wyoming trailed Air Force 27-14 with 8:44 remaining in the game, before the Cowboys scored 21 unanswered points from the 4:32 mark of the fourth quarter to the end of the game.
 
Vander Waal ended the day with 225 passing yards, 2 passing TDs, 22 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs, 247 yards of total offense and 4 TDs responsible for.  He completed 14 of 26 pass attempts (53.8 percent) on the day, with no interceptions.
 
Of those final three touchdowns, Vander Waal scored two of them on a five-yard TD run and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass.  He completed four big passes of 11, 16, 12 and 16 yards during a 13-play, 76-yard drive to pull Wyoming to within a touchdown at 27-21 with 4:32 remaining in the game.  He converted a 4th and 9 into a 12-yard pass completion during a 9-play, 58-yard drive to give the Cowboys a 28-27 lead with 1:09 left in the game.
 
Vander Waal came off the bench in the first quarter to replace an injured Sean Chambers at quarterback.  On Vander Waal' first play of the game, he threw an 11-yard TD pass to give Wyoming a 7-0 lead.  He also had a three-yard TD run in the first quarter to give Wyoming a 14-7 lead.  Vander Waal generated 11 explosive pass plays of 10 yards or more, including plays of: 11 yards, 60, 15, 16, 15, 11, 16, 12, 16, 12 and 22.  He accounted for a career high 225 passing yards, a career best 247 yards of total offense and was responsible for a career high four touchdowns -- two rushing and two passing.

Taylor Cornelius, Oklahoma State (30-of-46, 338 yards, 5 TDs, 2 INT, QBR: 89.2)
Cornelius, who notches his sixth 300-yard game of the year, also runs for a career-best 106 yards and another touchdown before connecting on an 11-yard TD pass with 42 seconds to go to lift the Cowboys to a 45-41 Big 12 upset of No. 9 West Virginia.
 
 
Duane Haskins, Ohio State (28-of-38, 405 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 94.1)
Haskins, who registers his fourth 400-yard game of the year, also rushes for a career-best three touchdowns as he leads an Ohio State comeback in a 52-51 overtime victory over Big Ten foe Maryland on the road.
 
McKenzie Milton, UCF (13-of-25, 268 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 74.5)
Milton, who adds a rushing touchdown, has his fifth 4-TD game of the year as he leads the Knights to a 38-13 AAC victory over No. 24 Cincinnati.
 
Gardner Minshew, Washington State (43-of-55, 473 yards, 7 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 88.4)
Minshew sets his career-highs for touchdowns and passing yards, notching his eighth career 400-yard game, as he leads the Cougars to a 69-28 Pac-12 win over Arizona – it was the 10th win of the season, matching the school record.
 
Kyler Murray, Oklahoma (21-of-32, 272 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 95.7)
Murray also runs for 99 yards and a career-best three scores, including a 75-yard fourth-quarter dash to help the Sooners pull away from Kansas in a 55-40 Big 12 victory.
 
Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (23-of-30, 316 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 80.2)
Pickett tallies season-bests in completions, yards and TD passes as he leads the Panthers to a 34-13 road win over Wake Forest to clinch a spot in the ACC Championship game.
 
Nathan Rourke, Ohio (17-of-26, 209 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 96.8)
Rourke, who also runs for 77 yards and a touchdown, leads the Bobcats to a 52-17 blowout of MAC East leader Buffalo, which had been undefeated in league play.
