Mark Branch has announced the signings of six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at the University of Wyoming. Signees Brooks Baker (Brookfield, Mo.), Stephen Buchanan (Loyal, Wis.), Brendon Garcia (Pueblo, Colo.), Job Greenwood (Livermore, Colo.), Jake Svihel (Andover, Minn.) and Terren Swartz (Gillette, Wyo.) will join the Cowboys in fall of 2019.
"I'm pretty optimistic that this is going to be one of the better classes that we've signed," Branch said. "I think we addressed some major needs that we have, and with such a young roster right now and some of the places that we're thin at, these guys are going to fill those gaps and give us an opportunity to get to that next level in the next four to five years."
The Cowboy class combines to include seven state titles, three Fargo/USA Wrestling Folkstyle national titles, 15 All-America honors and four individuals ranked in the top 15 of their weight class.
Brooks Baker | Heavyweight | Brookfield, Mo. | Brookfield
Projecting as a heavyweight for the Cowboys, Brooks Baker comes to Wyoming after lettering for four years in wrestling and three years in football at Brookfield High School in Brookfield, Mo. The No. 9 ranked heavyweight in the country according to FloWrestling, Baker has compiled a 130-9 record over the last three seasons on the way to two state titles, a state runner-up finish and three district titles. Has been a standout in football as well, being named all-district and all-state on the offensive and defensive lines in 2017, as well as all-conference selections in 2017 and 2018. Along with being a member of National Honor Society, Baker is a three-time academic all-state selection.
Stephen Buchanan | 197 pounds | Loyal, Wis. | Loyal
Stephen Buchanan hails from Loyal, Wis., where he attended and wrestled for Loyal High School, coming in at No. 16 nationally at 195 pounds according to
Intermat. The 2018 Wisconsin state champion is expected to wrestle at 197 pounds at Wyoming. Earlier this year, he finished third at 195 pounds at the USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals. Buchanan took first at the Cloverbelt Conference Tournament in February, followed by top finishes at the state regionals and sectionals before going 3-0 at the state championships for first at 182 pounds. Buchanan has had a strong year, going 57-10 with 40 falls since last November, according to Trackwrestling.
Brendon Garcia | 125 pounds | Pueblo, Colo. | Pueblo County
The No. 57 overall recruit in the class of 2019 and the No. 2/5-ranked high schooler at 113 pounds by a number of different services, Brendon Garcia signs with Wyoming after attending Pueblo County High School in Pueblo, Colo. Projecting as a 125 pounder at Wyoming, Garcia is a six-time Fargo Junior All-American, with all six finishes coming in the top three. Garcia is also a three-time Colorado state champion, winning state titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Aside from his state titles, he has posted numerous other wins on big stages, winning two Fargo Junior Greco national titles, while also winning at the 2017 Reno Tournament of Champions.
Job Greenwood | 141 pounds | Livermore, Colo. | Poudre
Brother of current Cowboy wrestler
Jacob Greenwood, Job Greenwood comes to Wyoming from Livermore, Colo., where he attends Poudre High School and wrestles at the Olympic Training Center under coach Kevin Jackson. Greenwood projects to wrestle at 141 pounds collegiately, and already has a Fargo Junior Greco-Roman All-America honor under his belt. He has had a nice high school career thus far, having racked up a pair of Colorado state finals appearances while also having been named an all-conference selection twice and all-region three times. Serving as team captain each of the last three seasons, Greenwood has been named to the all-state second team three times as well. He also participates with Grit Athletics.
Jake Svihel | 133 pounds | Andover, Minn. | Totino-Grace
Jake Svihel, signing with Wyoming from Andover, Minn., where he has been a three-time state finalist at Totino-Grace High School, projects to wrestle at 133 pounds collegiately. The No. 13-ranked recruit at 120 pounds by
Intermat, Svihel took first at 120 pounds at the USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals last March, going 4-0 at the prestigious junior event. He had a successful summer with a title at the Northern Plains Regional Freestyle Championships in May to follow a fourth-place finish at the Northern Plains Regional Greco-Roman Championships. Svihel has also taken titles at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, St. Croix Falls Wrestling Classic and the Minnesota State 5AA Sectionals in the last year.
Terren Swartz | 197 pounds | Gillette, Wyo. | Thunder Basin
Projecting as a collegiate 197 pounder, Terren Swartz signs with Wyoming from in-state Thunder Basin High School in Gillette, Wyo., after racking up three NHSCA All-America honors so far in his career. Swartz is a 2018 Wyoming state champion at 195 pounds, taking first at last year's state tournament following second and fourth-place finishes in 2017 and 2016, respectively. This year, Swartz has also racked up a fourth-place finish at FloNationals, along with titles at the WAWA Junior State Freestyle Championships, WAWA Junior State Greco-Roman Championships, Ron Thon Memorial Varsity Tournament and Moorcroft Mixer-Varsity Tournament—all at 195 pounds.
