BOISE, Idaho – Cowgirl Swimming and Diving fell to the Boise State Broncos, 112-187, on Saturday afternoon at the Boise West Family YMCA and Boise City Aquatics Center.
The Cowgirls claimed three individual victories in the day's 16 events. Sophomore
Karla Contreras claimed the top spot on both the 1-meter and 3-meter board, while freshman
Hannah Mclean-Leonard touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly.
McLean-Leonard clocked a 55.49 in the 100 fly, more than a half second faster than the competition. It is her first collegiate victory in the 100 butterfly. Junior
Samantha Burke and senior
Kelly Sheldon followed up, placing third and fourth respectively. McLean-Leonard also placed second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.52.
"It was pretty obvious that our women are tired after some really good training the past couple weeks," UW head coach
Dave Denniston said. "Boise State has a lot of talent and just beat us. I know the team is looking forward to some rest and getting back to being able to swim faster and faster. Diving was definitely a highlight with
Karla Contreras winning both events and
CeeJay Harris and
Abigail Zoromski posting career scores. Hannah [McLean-Leonard] had a really good swim winning the 100 butterfly, as did
Susanna Schumann in the breaststroke and
Monique Rae in the backstroke."
Contreras once again swept both boards and now has 14-straight victories this season in diving events during duals. On the 3-meter, Contreras outscored the second-place diver by nearly 30 points with a mark of 315.23. Junior
CeeJay Harris scored a career-best 279.30 to place third. On the 1-meter, she edged out her teammate, junior
Peyton GrandPre, to place first with a 266.03. GrandPre scored a 251.03, while Harris placed fourth with a 237.78.
Both men's and women's squads will return to the pool next weekend with competition at UNLV. Both teams will take on the Rebels on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday's races will begin at 12 p.m., with UW taking on both UNLV and Grand Canyon University.
