LARAMIE, Wyo. – Cowgirl soccer played a full 110 minutes for the first time this season against McNeese State on Sunday, tying 0-0 after double overtime at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
The Cowgirls (2-2-1) recorded a season-high 16 shots and put six on goal, but McNeese State (2-2-1) answered every opportunity and held Wyoming scoreless for the first time this season. Sunday also marked the first shutout for senior goalkeeper
Georgia Rowntree and the Cowgirls in 2017. The visitors tallied 11 shots, including seven between the two overtime periods.
Senior forward
Alisha Bass led all players with five shots, putting one on frame. Redshirt junior forward
Brittney Stark was the only Cowgirl to record multiple shots on goal, connecting on both of her attempts. Senior forward Savannah LaRicci led McNeese State with three shots, two on goal.
"For us the biggest thing today was that we didn't execute in front of the net," UW head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "We created some amazing chances, but we have to put them away. It seemed like we finished everything in front of the net on Friday, but we have to realize that every game is different. You have to do that every game and be consistent. That's where you become a special team and hopefully we'll get there."
Sunday was Wyoming's third-consecutive game with double-digit shots, after combining for just 13 in the first two games of the season. Rowntree's six saves were the most in a single game since seven in the season-opener at Baylor. Rowntree and Burton continued their streak of playing every minute so far this season. Senior defender
Claire Parker joined the pair with 110 minutes of action on Sunday. Sophomore forward
Michaela Stark made her first appearance since the Baylor game, logging 22 minutes and one shot on goal.
The Cowgirls have a split pair of games next weekend, starting with a road matchup at Utah Valley on Friday at 7:30 p.m. MT. Wyoming will then return home to face Northern Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m.
