LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming women’s soccer played its preseason Brown and Gold game on Sunday morning at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The Brown team struck early and kept the attack going to earn a 4-1 win over the Gold squad.

The intersquad match consisted of three 25-minute periods. The Brown team, equipped with the attacking trio of senior Alisha Bass, junior Brittney Stark and sophomore Michaela Stark, connected on offense from the opening whistle. In the second minute, Michaela Stark found the back of the net after chipping a shot over senior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree from near the end line. Later in the first frame, Brittney Stark sent a ball into the six-yard box that Bass calmly put away under the outstretched hands of Rowntree.

“It’s just our third day of preseason so it’s a good way to see what we have,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “There was a lot of good, a lot of bad. I don’t think we’re ahead or behind; we’re right where we need to be and we’ll get better as the preseason continues. This game gives us a lot of tape that we can use and that’s probably the best part.”

The Gold team found its only goal of the game late in the first period when assistant coach Matt Callaway evaded multiple defenders along with sophomore goalkeeper Cristina Salazar to tap in the goal.

“We’re all getting used to the flow of playing together and going into today we knew it was a work in progress,” Brittney Stark said. “We’re starting to understand that even if a play doesn’t go exactly the way we want it to, we can work through the little things and still do well.”

The Brown squad doubled its scoring total in the second period. Redshirt sophomore Summer Taube found the end of a cross and put away the opportunity to push the lead to 3-1. About 10 minutes later, a handball in the box awarded the Brown team a penalty kick. Brittney Stark stepped up to the spot and fired a shot that beat Rowntree to her left.

After two periods of high-paced offense, the last 25 minutes of action slowed and neither team was able to put another shot in the net. The Brown team held on to claim the 4-1 victory.

The Cowgirls will play in their lone exhibition match of the 2017 season this Friday against South Dakota State in Hastings, Neb. Kickoff from Hastings College is set for 5 p.m. MT.
