Memory of the 8 Run & Walk Set for September 16 in Gillette

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The seventh annual Memory of the 8 Run & Walk will take place in Gillette, Wyo., on Saturday, Sept. 16, the 16th anniversary of the tragic automobile accident that took the lives of eight UW cross country athletes. The annual event takes place to honor the eight victims, one of which was Morgan McLeland, a Gillette native. 

Registration begins at 9 a.m. on the day of the event and will take place at M&K Oil in Gillette. Participants can choose an eight-mile run or a 5-kilometer run or walk, which will each begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by a barbeque and social. The event is free to the public, while donations will be accepted and shirts and hats will be available for purchase.  

Six victims of the 2001 accident were Wyoming natives. The eight Cowboys who passed away on Sept. 16, 2001 were Cody Brown of Hudson, Colo.; Kyle Johnson of Riverton, Wyo.; Joshua Jones of Laramie, Wyo.; Justin Lambert-Belanger of Timmons, Ontario, Canada; Kevin Salverson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Nick Schabron of Laramie, Wyo.; Shane Shatto of Douglas, Wyo.; and McLeland.
