LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming women's soccer will play its first game at the Louis S.
Madrid Sports Complex this season on Friday against Southern Utah. Kick-off
with the Thunderbirds is set for 4:30 p.m. MT. The Cowgirls will then hit the
road for a matchup with the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT at the
Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.
The Cowgirls opened the 2017 season on the road at Baylor
last week, falling in overtime, 2-1. Redshirt junior forward Brittney Stark
netted the goal for UW that would eventually force extra time, but a goal from
the Bears in the 100th minute would be the difference. Stark logged three of
Wyoming's four shots on goal in 97 minutes of action. Senior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree and junior defender Taylor Burton played every minute of the contest.
The Bears put nine of their 27 shots on frame, resulting in
seven saves by Rowntree which tied her career high. The team captain made seven
saves in three different matches last season and UW went 1-2-0 in those games.
After earning the second-most corner kicks in the Mountain
West last season, UW was held to zero corner kicks in the season-opener. The
last time the Cowgirls failed to earn a single corner kick was in a 1-0 loss at
Nevada on Oct. 18, 2015.
"For our team, it's about cleaning up the details from last
week," head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "It looked like it was our second game of
the season. The heart was there, the effort was there, but cleaning things up,
tactically and with some of our touches, is going to be crucial for this
weekend. Each position group has its own stuff to work on. I hope we come out
flying in our first home game, and use that momentum and the energy from our
fans. We want to relish in that and make it a great day."
The Thunderbirds have already competed against two other
Mountain West schools in 2017. Southern Utah lost to Utah State, 4-0, in its
lone preseason match and fell to Boise State, 5-1, in its most recent outing.
The Thunderbirds also lost at UC-Riverside in their season-opener.
Friday will be the first matchup between the two schools.
Wyoming owns a 31-22-8 record all-time against current members of the Big Sky.
Last season, the Cowgirls clashed with three different Big Sky opponents. UW
defeated Idaho State, tied with Montana, and lost to Northern Colorado.
The Wildcats are 0-2-0 on the season after opening the year with
a road trip to Wisconsin. Kentucky fell to the Badgers, 2-0, before losing at
Marquette, 2-1, to close out the weekend. Freshman defender Eva Mitchell scored
the only goal so far this season for Kentucky. The Wildcats will host Eastern
Kentucky this Friday before facing the Cowgirls on Sunday.
Wyoming will compete against Kentucky for the first time in
school history on Sunday. UW is 1-9-1 all-time against current members of the
Southeastern Conference. The Cowgirls have not faced an SEC opponent since the
2003 season when they competed against Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss. Wyoming
earned its lone win over an SEC opponent defeating the Crimson Tide, 2-1, at
home.
