Wyoming’s Kepenc to Take Part in FIBA U20 Women’s European Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. (July 7, 2017) – Current Cowgirl basketball player Selale Kepenc has been selected to represent her home country of Turkey in the upcoming FIBA U20 Women’s European Championships. The event takes place from July 8-16 in Matosinhos, Portugal with 16 European countries competing.

There are four groups with four teams in each. Turkey is in Group D with Russia, the Netherlands and Serbia. The team’s first competition will be on Saturday, July 8, followed by contests against Russia, July 9, and Serbia, July 10. All teams will then advance to the playoff round of 16. Groups A and B, C and D will play crossover games with the top eight moving on to the quarterfinals.

A sophomore from Istanbul, Turkey, Kepenc played in 14 games off the bench during her freshman campaign. She averaged 2.8 points and 1.5 rebounds. She had a breakout game with 12 points and six rebounds in a key win for the Cowgirls against New Mexico to close out conference play.

FIBA Europe is one of five Regions of FIBA (along with Africa, Americas, Oceania and Asia) and is responsible for controlling and developing the sport of basketball in Europe.

Among the responsibilities of FIBA Europe are: promoting, supervising and directing international competition at the club and national team levels, as well as governing and appointing European international referees.
FIBA Europe is an international federation whose membership consists of the national basketball federations of Europe, of which there are currently 50 members. The highest decision making body is the Board of FIBA Europe which consists of 25 persons elected by the National Federations.
