LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming head track & field and cross country coach Bryan Berryhill announced the hiring of Scott Dahlberg on Monday as an assistant coach for UW’s track & field and cross country programs. Dahlberg will oversee the Cowboys’ cross country squad while working heavily with Wyoming’s distance athletes during the track & field season.
“As a staff, we’re really excited to add Scott (Dahlberg) and his wife Kristen to the Wyoming family and to the Laramie community,” Berryhill said. “Scott has proven himself as a coach at the Division II and Division I levels, as a recruiter and in being able to produce All-Americans. He’s a winner. Even as an athlete, he was an All-American at Western State. He knows how to win, he wants to win and I think he’s going to bring those winning ways to our cross country and distance programs.”
A native of Peyton, Colo., Dahlberg comes to Laramie after spending five years as an assistant track & field and cross country coach at Colorado State. During his time at CSU, Dahlberg helped elevate the Rams’ distance and cross country units to a status of national recognition, coaching athletes to nine All-American honors in track & field and two All-American honors in cross country. Additionally, Dahlberg handled the coordination of recruiting efforts for the Colorado State track & field program.
Before his time at CSU, Dahlberg spent four seasons as a coach in Gunnison, Colo., at his alma mater, Western State Colorado University. As a coach at Western State, Dahlberg assisted in coaching a Division II national championship cross country team as well as four national runner-up squads and 76 Division II All-Americans. As an athlete, he earned two All-American honors in cross country and three in track & field before graduating in 2008 with honors in mathematics, secondary education and exercise sports science. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Emporia State University.
“I’m really excited to join the University of Wyoming family,” Dahlberg said. “It seems like there’s been great support across the board from the community to the administration. Coach Berryhill has been amazing through this whole process.”
Dahlberg is excited to utilize Laramie’s trail system in his coaching role. “I’m looking forward to getting back to some altitude training. I think there’s a lot of benefit that comes with it. I think Laramie is set up to do well in the aerobic events.”
Along with Dahlberg’s hire, the University of Wyoming track & field program announces the retirement of associate head coach and throws coach Paul Barrett, who leaves Wyoming as one of the most decorated coaches in the history of Wyoming Athletics. In his 23 seasons at Wyoming, Barrett coached Cowboy and Cowgirl throwers to 19 All-American awards, 32 individual conference titles and a total of 114 all-conference awards.
With Barrett’s departure, Amanda Clower has been named associate head track & field and cross country coach, while Quincy Howe has been named associate head track & field coach. Clower will continue to work with UW’s distance athletes while overseeing the Cowgirls’ cross country squad, while Howe will continue coaching Wyoming’s jumpers and hurdlers after recently mentoring Scott Carter to First Team All-American status in the triple jump. UW Athletics is currently conducting a search for an assistant track & field coach to work with the UW throwers.
