MW Release|Complete List of Wyoming's Honorees
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West
Conference announced its 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Award winners on Tuesday, and
the University of Wyoming had a school-record 90 student-athletes named to this
year's team. A league-record 756 student-athletes were honored, including 77
individuals who have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative grade point average
over two or more terms. The 756 honorees surpassed the previous Conference high
of 734 in 2015-16.
Women's track &
field garnered the most awards for UW with 16 MW Scholar-Athletes. The
breakdown by sport for the remainder of Wyoming's 2016-17 MW Scholar-Athletes
includes 12 in women's swimming & diving; 10 in women's soccer; eight in
women's basketball; eight from women's cross country; eight from volleyball; six
in women's golf; five from men's track & field; five from women's tennis;
four in men's cross country; four in men's golf; three from football; and one
from men's basketball.
Cowgirl volleyball's
eight award-winners were the most of any volleyball program in the MW, while Cowgirl
basketball tied with Fresno State for the most women's basketball honorees in
the conference.
The sophomore and
junior classes led the way with 24 honorees, each. Additionally, there were 17 freshmen,
19 seniors and six graduate students who earned the honor this year. Ten
student-athletes also carried a 4.0 grade point average.
The MW
Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the
Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed
at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a
cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in
varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.
