GoWyo.com will connect with several Cowboy basketball players throughout the summer in a special weekly series called “Connecting with the Cowboys.” This week we visit with senior Alan Herndon, who recently graduated with a degree in psychology and has one year of eligibility remaining with the Cowboys.
GoWyo.com – How great of a feeling was it walking across the stage and receiving your bachelor’s degree in psychology a few weeks ago?
Herndon – It was a great experience to have my family and grandmother there. My family has always put a high emphasis on education and it was something I was striving for. It was such a great feeling to see all of their smiling faces as I walked across the stage. Being alongside Morris Marshall was also something very special.
GoWyo.com – What led to you pursuing a degree in psychology?
Herndon – I started as a business major and asked some teammates about their major and Derek Cooke, Jr. told me about how much he enjoyed his classes in the psychology program. Once I took a course in my major I loved it and it really turned into a passion.
GoWyo.com – What are your goals heading into next season?
Herndon – I want to continue to develop defensively. I want to continue to focus on that with my goal of being a member of the All-MW Defensive Team. I want to work on footwork and have a strong mentality on the defensive end of the floor.
GoWyo.com – You had great success shooting the three point ball last season. What helped you with that?
Herndon – I had great confidence last year. I always knew I had the ability to make shots, but last year was a confidence builder. Just to be able to shoot it at a high rate helps develop the rest of your game.
GoWyo.com – Is it nice to have the team around working together during the summer?
Herndon – I think it is great to have the guys around. It shows the dedication of this team. I hope that we can become disciplined on both sides of the ball next season and really work on limiting our turnovers. I also want to stay focused and have that edge on defense.
GoWyo.com – How happy are you for the next step for seniors Morris Marshall and Jason McManamen?
Herndon – Having Morris on the staff will be great with the spirit and energy he brings. Morris made us all work harder on the floor and he will continue to bring his positive energy to our program. I’m excited for Jason to get a chance to play at the next level overseas. He is a tremendous shooter that has a bright future.
GoWyo.com – What is your favorite thing about Wyoming during the summer time?
Herndon – I love to go to Jubilee Days and Frontier Days. It is always something new at those events and it always interests me. I also like the culture that is at those two events and it opens me up to new things and allows me to enjoy this great area.
