SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Senior Ryan Wallen wrapped up his final round of the NCAA Men's
Division I Washington Regional on Wednesday at the Aldarra Golf Club, carding a
77 (+6) to tie for 38th overall.
Wallen started the day four over on his first four holes,
leaving himself with a steep hill to climb to earn the individual bid to the
NCAA Championship. Back-to-back birdies late in the round brought Wallen into
the top half of the field, but a bogey on 17 bumped him back down. Wallen finished
with a tournament score of 223 (+10), ahead of all four of the other golfers
who earned individual bids to the Washington Regional.
"We knew we needed to shoot under par today, and that probably
resulted in him playing too aggressive," UW head coach Joe Jensen said. "It was
still an awesome tournament for him, but he just didn't play as well today as
he did the last two days. Wanting to finish well probably made him a little
tight, but it was still a good showing and I'm proud of him."
The conditions of the course made things tough on Wednesday. Only
13 of the field of 75 student-athletes scored under par on the day. Just 10
players finished the tournament under par. Penn State's Cole Miller claimed the
individual title with a score of 206 (-7), three strokes ahead of three players
at -4.
Top-seed USC won the regional as the only team to finish under
par with a score of 849 (-3). Kent State moved into second on Wednesday with a
mark of 855 (+3), followed by Florida State and Penn State tying for third with
scores of 862 (+10). Alabama rounded out the top five, scoring an 863 (+11).
Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M earned the individual spot finishing at two
under with a mark of 211.
