LARAMIE,
Wyo. – Cowboy
Golf’s Ryan Wallen will compete as an individual in the NCAA Division I men’s
regional in Sammamish, Wash., next week, beginning with the first round on
Monday, May 15.
Wallen, a native of Blaine, Wash., will return
to his home state to compete in the tournament hosted by the University of
Washington at the Aldarra Golf Club. The par-71 course measures 6,885 yards.
Each of the six regionals will feature three
rounds of competition running from May 15-17. The field at the Washington
Regional is comprised of 14 teams and five individuals. The University of
Southern California holds the top seed in the region. The host Huskies are the
fifth seed. Mountain West foe San Diego State is in the seventh spot. The low
five teams and the lowest individual finisher not on an advancing team will
earn a spot at the 2017 NCAA Men’s Championship.
Wallen is the first Cowboy to earn an NCAA
Regional bid since Gabe Maier in 2011, and the seventh in school history. The
Cowboy senior has the opportunity to become the first Wyoming men’s golfer to
ever advance from a regional to the NCAA Championship. Wallen’s season scoring
average of 71.89 is the second-lowest in school history and less than one-tenth
of a stroke from Maier’s school record set in the 2009-10 season.
“I think it’ll be great to play a course in an
area I’m familiar with,” Wallen said. “I have a lot of family and friends in
Seattle and it’s just a two-hour drive for my parents to come down. I haven’t
played there before but I think it’ll be a tree-lined course, pretty
traditional like most of the courses in Washington. Getting yardages, being
acclimated to the weather, it’s all what I’m used to and it should be an
advantage for me.”
Wallen’s performance at the 2017 Mountain West
Championship was one for the history books. His third-place finish was the
lowest ever in the event by a Cowboy, and earned him a spot on the MW
All-Conference team. It also matched the best finish ever by a Wyoming men’s
golfer at a conference championship, tying Don Abbott’s third-place finish at
the 1992 WAC Championship
Competition will begin on Monday, May 15. Live
