COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Wyoming Men’s
Golf’s Ryan Wallen was named to the 2017 All-Conference team, the Mountain West
announced today. Wallen is the first Cowboy golfer to earn an All-Conference
selection since Gabe Maier in 2011.
Wallen’s 2016-17 season proved to
be one for the record books. His senior-year scoring average of 71.89 was the
third-best in school history. His 108 birdies on the year tied for the
sixth-most in UW single-season history. Wallen’s scoring average on par 4 holes
this season of 4.06 was the lowest ever by a Cowboy golfer.
“I’m thrilled that the coaches
recognize him as one of the top golfers in the league and an all-conference
performer,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “He had a solid year and he’s a great
student-athlete. His play at the conference championship in front of the rest
of the teams in our league was a great showcase of his talent. I’m happy for
him but it’s also a team award. His teammates push him every day and he would be
the first to tell you that.”
Wallen made history at the 2017
Mountain West Championship placing tied for third, the lowest finish ever in
the event by a Cowboy. His accomplishment matched the best finish ever by a
Wyoming men’s golfer at a conference championship, tying Don Abbott’s
third-place finish in the 1992 WAC Championship.
As the lone senior on the UW roster,
Wallen helped the Cowboys to their second-best team scoring average in school
history. All 35 of Wallen’s rounds were counted toward the team score.
Wallen is the fourth Cowboy
golfer to be selected to the Mountain West’s All-Conference team. He joins a
list of 15 previous Wyoming men’s golfers to earn all-conference accolades.
