TUCSON, Ariz. – Wyoming men's golf concluded the 2017 Mountain West Championship
on Sunday at the Omni Tucson National – Catalina Course with a third-round
score of 296 (+8). The Cowboys ended the tournament with a team score of 872
(+8) to place eighth overall. Senior Ryan Wallen tied for third as an
individual, finishing with a score of 209 (-7)
Wyoming struggled in the final round of the conference
championship, but Wallen still managed to log a performance for the record
book. After an even-par round of 72 on Sunday he ended the weekend tied for
third, the lowest finish ever by a Cowboy in the MW Championships. He also
matched Don Abbott's third-place finish in the 1992 WAC Championships for the
best conference finish by a Cowboy in school history.
"First of all, I'm happy for Ryan (Wallen). He played a great
tournament," UW head coach Joe Jensen said. "We tried hard today, but we
struggled in the last few holes. There's no doubt we would have liked to finish
better, but it just wasn't our day. It's tough, but we've had a nice year and
there are a lot of young guys on our team. I'm confident in where this program
is headed."
Junior Arron Lickteig matched Wallen's mark for the low round of
the day for UW at 72 (E). Sophomore John Murdock scored a 76 (+4) to finish
tied with Lickteig in 42nd place with a score of 224 (+8).
Junior Glenn Workman also carded a 76 (+4) on Sunday, bringing
his total to 222 (+6). He was Wyoming's second-lowest finisher, tying for 38th.
Junior Drew McCullough tallied an 83 (+11), tying for 49th with a score of 229
(+12).
UNLV edged out Colorado State to earn the team conference title
with a score of 846 (-18). Brian Humphreys of Boise State claimed the individual
title with a mark of 204 (-12).
