TUCSON, Ariz. – Wyoming men's golf sits in sixth place after the
first 18 holes of the Mountain West Championship. The Cowboys scored a 289 (+1)
on Friday at the Omni Tucson National – Catalina Course.
Senior Ryan Wallen led the way for
UW, carding a five-under 67 in the opening round. Wallen's seven birdies tied
for the second-most of any player in the field. Juniors Drew McCullough and Glenn Workman both shot rounds of 72 (E). McCullough recorded the day's only eagle
for the Pokes on the par-five eighth hole. He leads the team with seven eagles
this season.
"I'm pleased with how today went
and we're in the hunt with a lot of golf left to play," UW head coach Joe
Jensen said. "Ryan (Wallen) wanted to get off to a good start and he certainly
did that today. Drew (McCullough) and Glenn (Workman) both played well, and
it's just a matter of getting a solid fourth score. I know we'll come out tomorrow
and play a complete round of golf."
Sophomore John Murdock and junior
Arron Lickteig each finished the day with rounds of 78 (+6), rounding out UW's
team score of 289 (+1). The Cowboys' 3.05 average on par fives tied for the
lowest of any team in the tournament. Wallen once again led the way, finishing
two-under overall on the course's four par threes.
San Diego State and Boise State
currently sit at the top of the leaderboard with scores of 279 (-9). UNLV is in
third with a 281 (-7), followed by Colorado State with a 283 (-5) and New
Mexico with a 288 (E).
Wyoming will be paired with Utah State for the second round tomorrow. The Pokes will tee off in the same time
slots as round one, beginning at 8:20 MT.
