LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming men’s golf returns
to the Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson Resort in Tucson, Ariz., for the 2017
Mountain West Championship. The 11-team field will play 54 holes over three
days, beginning on Friday and concluding on Sunday.
The five competitors for the Cowboys will be senior Ryan Wallen, juniors Drew McCullough, Glenn Workman, and Arron Lickteig, and
sophomore John Murdock. Wallen brings three years of experience at the Mountain
West Championship, while McCullough and Lickteig have competed in each of the
last two conference championships. Workman represented the Cowboys in the 2015
event.
The Cowboys finished sixth at last year’s conference
championship. After sitting in 8th after 18 holes, UW moved up to 7th on day
two and finally up to sixth in the final round. The Cowboys played the last 18
holes at seven under, the second-lowest score of any team. McCullough posted
the low score for Wyoming, tying for sixth with a 211 (-5). Wallen finished
tied for 15th with a score of 214 (-2), while Lickteig tied for 30th, tallying
a 219 (+3).
“We’re doing what we talked about all season,” UW head coach
Joe Jensen said. “Two of the three rounds last week were really solid. It’s not
only how we played but how the guys are treating it. Being more confident, more
focused. I think we can we win, I can talk about it, but we won’t until the
guys believe it. And last week I started to believe it. So going into the
conference championship, we want to play our style first and foremost. Prepare
hard, focus on the process, have fun and see what happens. We all know that if
we play three complete rounds the way we’re capable of playing, we’ll be in the
mix.”
UNLV enters the tournament as the top-ranked team in the MW
at No. 14 according to GolfStat’s national ranking. San Diego State is second
at No. 36. New Mexico (No. 45) and Colorado State (No. 80) round out the group
of MW teams ranked in the top 100. Wyoming is sixth at No. 101. First-round
pairings are based on GolfStat rankings, grouping the Cowboys with the Wolf
Pack on Thursday.
