LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 8, 2017) – Two doubles teams from the Wyoming tennis program were recognized by the ITA as the Oracle/ITA women’s Division I rankings were released on Tuesday. It’s the first time in program history that two teams have been ranked at the same time.
Ranked for the first time in their careers, sophomores Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg enter the week 70th. The duo are currently 13-5 overall and 6-1 this spring playing at the number one position. They’ve won the last six out of seven and had a five match winning streak. Earlier in the fall, the team went 1-1 at the ITA All-American with a win over Morales and DeFilippo of San Diego.
“Tessa and Elisa have been working very hard and have produced great results over the past two years which in turn is why they are climbing in the rankings,” head coach Dean Clower. “For us to have two doubles teams nationally ranked is a testament to where we are as a program. The athletes we have are all blue collar workers with tremendous athletic ability which gives us a chance every match we play in.”
Senior Dorottya Jonas and junior Magdalena Stencel are currently 66th is the latest rankings. The pair went 2-2 overall in the fall, going 1-1 at the ITA All-American Championships. They defeated the team of Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas of TCU, 8-7 (5), during the tournament. Bashota and Garrido-Rivas are currently tenth overall in the latest rankings.
Wyoming is currently 9-2 overall and riding a six-match winning streak. The team will return to action on Friday against the Iowa State Cyclones. The match is set for 2 p.m. MT in Ames.
