Cowgirl Tennis Set to Begin Mountain West Action

LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 30, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team will kick-off the 2017 Mountain West season on the road this week. The Cowgirls are set to face the Utah State Aggies on Friday followed by the Boise State Broncos on Sunday. The first match is set for 11 a.m. MT in Logan followed by an 11 a.m. start time in Boise.

“Both of these matches this weekend will be typical Mountain West battles and tightly contested,” head coach Dean Clower said. “Both teams are very well coached and playing on the road is always a tough task. We will need our upperclassmen to lead and the younger players to step up.”


The Cowgirls completed non-conference action with a 12-3 overall record and are riding a three-match winning streak. With the 12 wins, it’s the eighth season in a row that the program has reached double-digit wins and the 12 wins is fifth most in school history. UW is 7-0 at home this season which is a single-season best mark.

Freshman Ana Tkachenko sports an impressive 17-5 mark in her first season while going 12-2 in dual play. Four other Cowgirls have posted 15 wins overall led by senior Dorottya Jonas who is 15-10 overall. Sophomores Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg are 15-6 and 15-7 respectively while freshman Milka Genkova is 15-8. Junior Magdalena Stencel is 10-8 overall and 8-3 during the spring. Jonas and Tkachenko are 11-2 in dual action followed by Stencel and senior Miranda Talbert sporting an 8-2 mark. At the number one spot, Koonik and van Der Ploeg are 14-7 overall and 7-3 this spring in doubles action.
        
Utah State comes in to the week with a 9-6 overall non-conference mark. This is the conference opener for the Aggies as well. This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. UW leads the series 5-0. The last time the two squads met was April 17, 2016 with the Cowgirls coming out on top with a 5-2 win in Laramie. Utah State is coached by Sean McInerney who is in his fourth season with the program.

Boise State enters the contest with a 10-5 mark overall and 0-1 in MW play. BSU will play CSU prior to the Cowgirls. This will be the ninth meeting between the two schools. It is all tied up at four. The last time the two squads met was April 15, 2016 with the Broncos coming out on top with a 4-3 win in Laramie. Boise State is coached by Beck Roghaar who is in his seventh season with the program.
