Final Stats
LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 23, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team (12-3 overall) won its third straight match with a 7-0 victory against the New Mexico State Aggies (6-9 overall, 2-1 WAC) on Thursday afternoon. With a 7-0 mark at home, it's the most single-season home wins in program history. The previous mark was five which was set during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
"We got the job done in doubles and earned the point," head coach Dean Clower. "We have some areas to clean up in that part of our game, which is usually our specialty. In singles, I thought we were pretty disciplined and played our style. New Mexico State has a lot of good singles players. Their number one player has a solid record, so Magdalena (Stencel) did a solid job executing the game plan. Again, the freshmen are holding the bottom of the line-up, doing some good things. We are just tough to beat in any spot of our line-up because of our depth. There just aren't any holes."
In doubles action, it was a battle with the Cowgirls taking two of three matches. The number one team of Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg won 6-4 over Rebecca Keijzerwaard and Vanessa Valdez followed by Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko who needed the tiebreaker to come away with a 7-6 (7-1) win over Rimpledeep Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffault. At the number three spot, Magdalena Stencel and Miranda Talbert dropped a close one, 7-5, against Lindsay Harlas and Gabrielle Joyce.
Wyoming dominated in singles by not losing a single set in the six matches. van Der Ploeg defeated Keijzerwaard, 6-3, 6-2. Stencel won the opening set 6-2 over Kaur but fell behind 3-0 in the second. She would storm back winning the next six games to win the set 6-3. Jonas battled but came out on top over Valdez, 6-4, 6-2 followed by Koonik winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, against Eli Arnaudova. The Cowgirls closed out the match with wins by Milka Genkova, 6-0, 6-4, over Thiffault and Tkachenko winning 6-4, 6-0 against Harlas.
Wyoming will return to action next week on the road as it begins Mountain West play. The Cowgirls will face the Utah State Aggies on Friday, March 31, and the Boise State Broncos on Sunday, April 2. Both matches are set for 11 a.m. MT in Logan, Utah and Boise, Idaho respectively.
