URBANDALE, Iowa. (March 10, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team (9-3 overall) had its six-match winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss against the Iowa State Cyclones (12-2 overall) on Friday afternoon.
"The ladies fought hard today and rebounded well after a rare doubles loss," head coach Dean Clower said. "Kudos to Iowa State. They played very well and tough today. I liked the way and how we played in the match. Sometimes there are days the ball doesn't bounce your way and today was one of them. We will regroup and be ready for Montana and Northern Arizona next weekend."
In doubles action, Iowa State jumped out to the early 1-0 lead by taking two out of three matches. The Cowgirls got off to a good start with the team of Magdalena Stencel and Miranda Talbert defeating Regina Espindola and Karen Alvarez, 6-3. The Cyclones would win the next two straight to win the point. Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko lost 6-4 against Margarita Timakova and Annabella Bonadonna while Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg dropped their match, 7-5, against Samantha Budai and Maty Cancini.
The Cyclones would extend the lead to 3-0 by winning the first two singles matches. Stencel lost to Budai, 6-1, 6-4, while Timakova won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Koonik. Wyoming won its first point of the day with freshman Milka Genkova beating Erin Freeman, 6-3, 6-4. It was followed by Jonas coming back after losing in the first set, 6-2, to win the next two, 7-6, 6-1, to pull the Cowgirls to within one, 3-2. At the number three spot, van Der Ploeg dropped the first set 7-5, but answered with a 6-4 win in the second. Unfortunately, she lost the third, 6-3, to Espindola which helped seal the 4-3 win for Iowa State. In the final match of the day, Tkachenko defeated Bonadonna, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Wyoming will return to action next week with two home matches. The Cowgirls will host the Montana Grizzlies on Friday at 10 a.m. MT followed by a 9 a.m. Saturday match against Northern Arizona. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
