Cowgirl Basketball to Face Spartans in Conference Finale

LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 1, 2017) – The Wyoming women’s basketball team will close out the conference season on Friday against the San José State Spartans. Game time is set for an 8:00 p.m. MT tip at The Event Center. Live stats, video and audio can be found on the GoWyo.com website.

The Cowgirls enter the contest with a 20-8 overall record and are 12-5 in league play after a 56-49 win against Colorado State last night. It was the first win for the Cowgirls in the series since Feb. 22, 2014 when they earned a 75-49 victory in Laramie. It’s also the eighth time in head coach Joe Legerski’s career with 20-plus wins and the fourth time in school history with 12 conference victories in one season.

Junior Natalie Baker recorded a season-high 18 points during the game. Along with her 18 points, Baker shot 5-9 from the field, 7-9 from the free throw line and brought down four rebounds. Junior Bailee Cotton and sophomore Clara Tapia each added ten points while Cotton finished with a career-high nine rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 19-46 (.413) from the field and out rebounded the Rams 39-26.

UW is shooting 649-1488 (.436) from the field and 206-554 (.372) from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls are also outscoring opponents 64.9-53.8 and out rebounding teams 36.0-32.0. Wyoming ranks first in field goal percentage as well as three-point field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists.  

San José State enters the contest with a 10-18 overall record and a 7-9 mark in league play. Last time out, the Spartans dropped a 108-85 contest against Nevada. Senior Dezz Ramos leads the way averaging 23.3 points plus 2.9 rebounds. Senior Jasmine Smith is adding a team-high 8.3 rebounds along with 12.1 points. As a squad, the Spartans are shooting 758-1977 (.382) from the field, averaging 72.0 points and 37.4 rebounds per contest.

This will be the tenth meeting between the two schools with Wyoming holding a 6-3 lead in the series. The last time the two teams met was January 18, 2017 with the Cowgirls coming away with an 89-60 victory in Laramie. San José State is coached by Jamie Craighead who is in her fourth season with the program.
