HOUSTON, Texas – Cowboy swimming and diving continues to lead the
field at the Western Athletic Conference Championships after two days of competition
at the Houston CRWC Natatrorium.
The Cowboys sit in first with 285
points, followed by Air Force with 267 in second and Grand Canyon in third with
242 points.
Wyoming once again tallied
significant points on the boards with second, third and fifth place finishes in
the 3-meter diving event. Freshman Scotia Mullin scored a 349.75 to place
second, followed by senior Jacob Rehmeier in third with 319.85 points and
redshirt-sophomore Ryan Russi in fifth with 284.95 points.
"Wade was amazing in breaking the school
record today, just a terrific swim," UW head coach TJ Johnson said. "We did a
great job in the individual medley making up for the 500 freestyle. The 200
freestyle putting up the second-fastest time in school history got us back in
the right direction. The divers were super once again and then pushed us back
into the lead. Tomorrow we need to work hard to extend that lead."
Junior Wade Nelson broke the school record in
the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:45.00. His time broke his season-best
mark by over three seconds and was fast enough for a second-place finish.
Sophomore Jack Herron competed in the
consolation final of the 500 freestyle, and recorded the second-best time of
the finals with a mark of 4:23.64. It was his fastest time of the season.
The Cowboys will return to the pool tomorrow
morning at 9:30 a.m. MT for preliminary heats, with the finals set to begin at
5 p.m. MT.
