The Cowboys will make the 2,000 mile trek to the Grand Cayman Islands for the Cayman Islands Classic beginning on Monday. The Pokes open the three day tournament against South Dakota State in the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. MT on Monday.
Five of the teams in the tournament competed in post-season play in 2017 with Cincinnati, and South Dakota State advancing to the NCAA Tournament, while Iowa and Richmond participated in the NIT. Other teams include: Louisiana, Buffalo and UAB.
The game will be streamed by FloHoops for purchase. Fans can listen to the game and follow stats on GoWyo.com. The game will be broadcast live on radio over the 25 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network.
A Look at the Matchup
The Cowboys head to the Cayman Islands with a 2-0 overall record after defeating Oregon State on the road last Monday. Wyoming is one the nation's top teams defending the rim, as UW ranks No. 19 in the nation in total blocks with 14.
The Poke have also been effective shooting the basketball. Wyoming has connected on 19-of-41 three pointers for 46 percent. The Cowboys are also shooting 46 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.
Wyoming is averaging 74.5 points per game and allow the opposition to score 65.5. The Pokes are holding opponents to 40 percent from the field and 26 percent from the three point line.
The Jackrabbits are 3-1 on the season after falling to No. 4 Kansas 98-64 on Friday. South Dakota State is averaging 75.2 points per game, while allowing the opposition 67.2 per game.
South Dakota State is an effective shooting team. SDSU has hit 45 three pointers on the season connecting at a 39 percent clip. The Jackrabbits shoot 39.5 percent from the field and 72 percent from the charity stripe.
Each Team's Leaders
Senior forward
Hayden Dalton continues to lead the Pokes. He is averaging 26 points per game to go along with 11 rebounds. He is shooting 56 percent from the three point line. He is the first Pokes to score 20 or more points in the first two games of the season since Afam Muojke in 2008.
Senior forward
Alan Herndon has had a nice start to the season. He is averaging 12 points per game to go along with five rebounds and five blocks per game. He recorded a career-high six blocks at Oregon State. He ranks in the top-five in the nation in blocked shots per game.
South Dakota State is led by forward Mike Daum. He leads the team averaging 21.3 points per game and 10.8 rebounds. He is shooting 44 percent from behind the arc and 86 percent from the free throw line. He is the son of UW Hall of Famer Michelle Daum (Hoopes) and former UW tight end Mitch Daum.
Guard David Jenkins Jr. adds 14.8 points per game. He is an efficient three point shooter connecting at a 52 percent clip this season. Redd Tellinghuisen adds 9.0 points per game and is second on the team adding 6.5 rebounds per game.
About the Series
Monday's game is the fifth meeting in a series that dates back to 1962. Wyoming is 3-1 all-time against the Jackrabbits. The two teams met last season in Laramie, with the Pokes taking the contest 77-67.
