LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming men's and women's swimming teams will compete for the first time this season on Saturday in the DU Relay Meet. Races are set to begin at 1 p.m. MT in the El Pomar Natatorium.
The meet will kick off a new era for the Wyoming program as the first competition for first-year head coach
Dave Denniston. UW will be sending a total of 49 swimmers, 30 women and 19 men, to compete against teams from DU, Colorado School of Mines and the women's team from Northern Colorado. The DU men's and women's teams were both picked to win the 2018 Summit League Championship after finishing at the top of the conference last season, and the Denver men were ranked 25th in the FloSwimming Preseason Poll back in August.
"This meet is a good ice breaker to the season, and it gives us the opportunity to see some fast splits and see what our athletes are able to do," Denniston said. "They just have fun because relays are fun events. They're looking to go fast this weekend, we had some great stuff at the Brown and Gold meet. As a group, I think we're leading this team in a direction they want to go. While I'm there officially as the head coach, we feel that it's a team effort and we're excited for it."
The meet will be unlike any other Wyoming will compete in all season, consisting of only 12 relay races. The events, in order, will be a 200 medley, 3x500 freestyle, 300 butterfly, 300 backstroke, 300 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 100 underwater relay, 4x100 individual medley, 50x100x150x200 freestyle, 100 medley, 400 freestyle, and conclude with a 200 mixed medley exhibition. Last season, UW men's and women's teams finished in second place behind Denver.
This Saturday will also be a preview of Wyoming's first dual of the 2017-18 season. Denver men's and women's teams will come to Laramie on Oct. 14, a week after the DU Relays, for a dual at the Laramie High School. It will be the second dual of the season for the Pioneer women's team, after taking on New Mexico the day prior. That meet is set to being at 1 p.m. MT.
