LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming soccer found a late goal in the 84th minute to pull within a point but the Cowgirls could not complete the comeback on Senior Day, falling 3-2 inside the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Wyoming (7-9-2, 3-6-1 MW) fell behind early on an own goal in the eighth minute, unluckily headed backward over senior goalkeeper
Georgia Rowntree coming off her line. Not much else could separate the two squads in the opening 45 minutes, with New Mexico (12-6-0, 7-3-0 MW) maintaining its 1-0 lead.
The Cowgirls equalized less than four minutes into the second half on a goal almost as strange as the first. Freshman forward
Madison Barrick played a ball back to junior
Annika Clayton who sent a shot in to the lower left corner. New Mexico goalkeeper Emily Johnson appeared to have the angle covered, but let the ball slip through her hands when she bent down to secure the save. The ball rolled past her and into the net for the 49th-minute goal.
Less than three minutes later, the Lobos regained the lead when midfielder Eileen Zendejas gathered the rebound after Rowntree attempted to punch a corner kick away. Zendejas volleyed a shot back on frame that ricocheted off a UW defender and into the net.
New Mexico doubled its lead in the 68th minute on another rebound, this time after the initial shot bounced off the crossbar right to midfielder Jessie Hix who easily headed the ball in. The Cowgirls made things interesting in the final moments after finding a second goal in the 84th minute. Sophomore forward
Michaela Stark beat her defender and sent a ball into the six-yard box, where junior forward
Jemma House tapped the ball back to junior forward
Brittney Stark. The shot from Stark perfectly found the left upper-90 out of reach of Johnson. The Lobos buckled down in the last six minutes to secure the 3-2 win.
"I'm really proud of our group of seniors, even if we couldn't get the result we wanted today," UW head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "They've made great contributions to our program and have been an excellent group of student-athletes."
Rowntree and senior defender
Tristan Tyrrell each logged 90 minutes in their final home game for the Cowgirls. Senior forward
Alisha Bass recorded one shot in 86 minutes of action. Senior defender
Claire Parker played 63 minutes while senior midfielder
Summer Halle tallied 72 minutes. Barrick's assist was the first of her career, while Clayton's goal was her first of the 2017 season.
Brittney Stark now leads the Cowgirls with eight goals this season.
The Cowgirls will be at least five points out of sixth place after today's league games, ending their hopes of qualifying for the MW Tournament. Wyoming's final match of the 2017 season will be next Friday again conference rival Colorado State. Kick-off from Fort Collins, Colo., is set for 1 p.m. MT.
