LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 5, 2017) – Wyoming Swimming and Diving returns to
the pool for its first dual of 2017 this Saturday, Jan. 7, against Colorado
School of Mines. The competition is set to begin at 12 p.m. MT at the Corbett
Pool.
The Cowgirls closed
out their 2016 schedule at the
Colorado Mesa Invite on Dec. 3. The Orediggers also competed at the CMU Invite.
Two Cowgirls swimmers earned first-place finishes at the meet with their top
times of the season. Sophomore Shannon Chelsvig logged the top time
in the 400 individual medley, clocking in at 4:34.97. Senior Emily Stevens raced to victory in the 100 backstroke, beating out the
competition by less than half a second with a time of 55.29.
Midway through the season, three
Cowgirls currently hold top-five times among Mountain West competitors.
Sophomore Isobel Ryan ranks fifth in the 50 freestyle (23.03), third in the 100
freestyle (50.08) and first in the 100 backstroke (53.82). Junior Maria Harutjunjan also owns top-five times in three events. She has the top times in
both the 100 breaststroke (1:01.96) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.85), and the
fifth-best time in the 200 individual medley (2:02.78). Freshman Daniela Luna Rocha, Wyoming’s top distance freestyler, holds the fifth-fastest time in the
1000 freestyle (10:09.81).
“We’re looking forward to getting
things rolling again with meets every week for the next month,” UW head coach
Tom Johnson said. “We’ve been back at it and the team is training pretty well. We
scheduled this meet to have a senior day here in the spring semester. We’re
looking forward to Mines coming here, we already saw them once this season.
They have some swimmers that can get up and down the pool, and they should
challenge us in a few events. I appreciate what they do, they’re a strong
Division II program and it’ll be nice to knock some of the rust off before the
back half of our schedule.”
The Cowboys last competed on Dec.
3 against Utah in Green River, Wyoming. The Cowboys earned victories in six of
the day’s 16 events. Sophomore Jack Herron earned UW’s first win of the dual in the 200 freestyle
with a time of 1:40.76. Senior Gabe Rooker swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, with times
of 54.59 and 2:01.52, respectively. Senior Ryan Ball outpaced the competition in the 200 backstroke,
clocking in at 1:49.81. Junior Wade Nelson placed first in the 200 individual medley, finishing in
1:52.71. On the boards, freshman Scotia Mullin claimed the top score (322.80) on the three-meter, just
ahead of redshirt-sophomore Ryan Russi (317.48). The men’s squad also swam against
Mines at the CMU Invite last month.
Eight Cowboys have posted
top-five times in the Western Athletic Conference thus far this season. Herron, Nelson and Rooker lead the way,
each with a conference-leading time. Herron holds the fastest time in the 200
freestyle (1:37.20) and ranks fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:29.20). Nelson has
recorded top-five times in five different events. He leads the conference in
the 400 individual medley (3:49.43) and is second in the 200 individual medley
(1:48.21). Rooker has been strong in the breaststroke events this season, with
the top time in the 100 (53.84) and second-fastest time in the 200 (1:57.45).
