The Series with Cal Poly
Wyoming is 5-4 all-time against the Mustangs, winning by
a score of 35-2 last year in Laramie. Cal Poly was 4-0 against the UW to begin
the series, but have lost five straight dual meets to the Cowboys since. The
last win for Cal Poly came during the 2010-11 season, when the Mustangs took an
18-16 win in San Luis Obispo from the Pokes.
Cal Poly was idle last week, but have most recently
defeated West Virginia 19-18 before falling to Arizona State 30-15. The
Mustangs are led by Colton Shorts at 157-pounds. Shorts is the lone wrestler
ranked for Cal Poly and has a 16-9 record this season.
Wyoming in the Rankings
The Pokes once again have five wrestlers within the
national rankings. UW is led by All-American Bryce Meredith, who is ranked No.
8 by several organizations. Drew Templeman (No. 14) at 125-pounds, Branson Ashworth (No. 16) at 165 and Archie Colgan (No. 19) at 157 are all ranked in
the top-20 of their respective weights in the InterMat Individual rankings.
Cole Mendenhall finds himself ranked as high as 17th by Trackwrestling.
Last Time Out
Wyoming split its weekend series last week with an 11-33
loss to No. 20 South Dakota State before a dominating 32-14 win over Oregon
State on Sunday. The Pokes opened the dual against the Beavers with
four-straight wins and had five bonus point victories in total to secure the
win.
He Said It
“I think these two teams matchup well,” UW head coach Mark Branch said. “I certainly hope we come out ready to compete like we did on
Sunday instead of Friday night against South Dakota State. I always like to go
out there and get a day of practice in where we’ll have a workout or two with
cardio on the beach. Then on Thursday we will be back on the mat and focus on
the dual on Friday night.”
“There was definitely improvement on Sunday and that is
exactly what you want,” Branch added. “We all know that last Friday was not our
best but we’ll continue to work so that doesn’t happen again. Sunday wasn’t
perfect but we know that good things happen when we set our own pace and come
out aggressive. Cal Poly wrestled tough last year and even though the score may
have indicated it was lopsided, there were a lot of close matches. We
understand we have no room for error.”
Up Next
Wyoming will be back in action next Saturday at Utah Valley.
The dual will begin in Orem, Utah, at 4 p.m. MT.
