LARAMIE, Wyo. – Cowgirl swimming and diving faces a full slate of action against
two Mountain West foes this weekend. On Friday, Wyoming welcomes the Boise
State Broncos in a dual being hosted at Laramie High School. Diving events will
begin at 4:20 p.m. MT followed by swimming events at 5 p.m. The following
afternoon, the Cowgirls will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to face rival
Colorado State. That dual will take place starting at 12 p.m. MT at Moby Pool.
Last weekend, a pair of freshmen led the way in a tough
double-dual against Denver and #16 Minnesota. Daniela Luna Rocha began her weekend with a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle,
finishing in 10:19.32. She then capped off her performance with a win in the
500 freestyle for the Cowgirls. Her time of 5:01.70 was a whole four seconds
faster than the competition. On the boards, Karla Contreras recorded a pair of
NCAA qualifying scores. She earned a first-place finish in the 3-meter event,
scoring a 312.50, and then a second-place finish in the 1-meter event with a
score of 284.05.
“We’ve had some tough training days this week, and we’ll be
ready for Boise State on Friday and Colorado State on Saturday,” UW head coach
Tom Johnson said. “We’ve focused on speed and technical work. Last time Boise
State came here, it was a great meet. It came down to the last event and the
altitude took its toll on them. We look forward to having them back, having the
meet at the high school will be a neat event in a beautiful facility. Frankly, I
think Boise State is the best team in our league and we’ll give them a run.
Saturday we have Colorado State and I would hope that none of our girls need
motivation for that meet.”
Boise State most recently defeated Idaho by a score of
164-128 on Jan. 14 to move to 3-1 in duals this season. The Broncos won all 14
swimming events, and four individuals each won three events. Colorado State
finished third in their last outing at the USD Shootout. The Rams’ last dual
event came on Dec. 3 when they faced both Air Force and New Mexico. They lost
both matchups.
