LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming soccer returns home for a matchup with the Utah Valley
Wolverines this Friday, at 4:30 p.m. The first 50 students to arrive at the Louis
S. Madrid Sports Complex will also receive vuvuzelas.
Wyoming looks to
build on its 4-1 victory over New Mexico State last Sunday. The Cowgirls
recorded a season-best four goals and their largest margin of victory since a
3-0 win over Fresno State last season (9/27/15). Wyoming’s 23 shots were the
most since tallying 25 shots against Idaho State a year ago (9/18/15) and tied
for the second-most by a MW team this season.
The Cowgirls carry a
3-2-1 mark through their third week of games, tying for the second-best record
in the Mountain West, and still rank near the top of the conference in several
statistical categories. Wyoming averages the second-most shots per game (17.50)
and third-most goals per game (1.83) in the MW. Corner kicks continue to be a
strength for Wyoming, now with a conference-best 40 attempts. San Jose State is
second in corner kicks earned with 31.
Tallying three goals
in her last three games, senior defender Katie Marcheso is tied for second in
the MW in scoring. Senior forward Anne Hinman leads Wyoming in shots with 14,
sixth-most in the conference, and notched her first-career goal on Sunday. The
Cowgirls are also the only MW team to have earned two penalty kicks this
season, and one of four conference teams to convert on at least one.
On the defensive end,
the Cowgirls own the third-lowest goals-against average at 1.12. Junior
goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree is one of three conference goalkeepers to record
multiple shutouts this season, and her 18 saves rank tied for third in the MW.
Rowntree and junior defender Alisha Bass lead the team in minutes with 553 and
511, respectively.
Utah Valley is the
final non-conference opponent the Cowgirls will face at home during the 2016
season. Wyoming has not lost in Laramie to a non-conference foe since Sept. 22,
2013, in a double-overtime loss to Idaho State, 1-0. The Cowgirls are 6-0-1 in
non-conference home games since that time.
“Utah Valley is a
good team,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “They just knocked off UNLV so we
know we have our hands full. We face them at home, which is a benefit to us,
but they play good soccer and move the ball well so it’ll be a good challenge
for us.”
Utah Valley returns
eight starters and 21 letterwinners from last year’s NCAA Tournament team. The
Wolverines finished the season at 14-7-1 and tied for second in the Western
Athletic Conference with a 7-2-1 mark.
The Wolverines are
4-1-0 on the year and head to Laramie riding a three-game winning streak. Their
only loss of the season was a road contest at Arizona, where the Wolverines
fell, 5-1. Utah Valley has allowed just one goal in its last three games, and
most recently handed UNLV its first loss of 2016, 2-1. The victory over the
Rebels also moved Utah Valley up to eighth in the West region of the NSCAA’s
weekly poll.
Junior forward Alexis
Peterson leads Utah Valley in scoring despite coming off the bench in all five
games in 2016. Peterson has netted three goals on just five shots, good for a
team-best .600 shooting percentage. Redshirt-junior defender Sara Callister
leads the Wolverines in assists with two, and also has one goal to her name.
Wyoming leads the
all-time series with Utah Valley 5-1-0. The last time the two teams met, the
Wolverines picked up the 3-0 win at home in Orem, Utah. Live stats and the live
