University of Wyoming sophomore quarterback Josh Allen was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Cowboys to a 40-34 triple overtime win against Northern Illinois last Saturday.  Allen earns the honor in his first start of the 2016 season and only his second career start for the Cowboys.

Allen scored the winning touchdown on a spectacular seven-yard scramble in the third overtime to give Wyoming the home victory over NIU.  Allen’s game-winning touchdown came on a third-down and four play and was one of five third-down plays he converted into first downs or scores on the night.  His third-down conversions included the seven-yard winning TD scamper, a 15-yard run, and pass completions of 14, 13 and five yards for first downs.

Against the Huskies, Allen completed 19 of 29 pass attempts (65.5 percent) for 245 yards, 2 TD passes and no interceptions.  He also had 10 rushing attempts for 70 yards and one rushing TD (the game winning TD in the third overtime).

In the second half and overtime, Allen was spectacular completing 77.8 percent of his passes (14 of 18 passing) for 190 yards through the air.

The sophomore from Firebaugh, Calif., accounted for 315 yards in total offense, while leading the Pokes to 488 yards of total offense in the victory.

Allen connected with seven different receivers in the game, including two receivers who posted 100-yard receiving games.  Senior  Tanner Gentryended with 104 yards receiving and one TD reception, and fellow senior Jake Maulhardt had 106 yards.

A redshirt sophomore, Allen was responsible for three of Wyoming’s five touchdowns (two passing and 1 rushing).  He engineered scoring drives of 30 yards, 52 yards, 75 yards and 80 yards in regulation, plus two TD drives in the three overtime periods.

In addition, Allen guided a Cowboy offense that did not commit a turnover and did not allow a sack.
