The University of Wyoming women’s golf team will continue
its fall schedule as host of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on
Saturday and Sunday at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. It will be the
sixth-consecutive year that UW will host its fall tournament at the Classic
Club.
“The Classic Club is a fantastic golf course,” Cowgirl head
coach Josey Stender said. “The setup, the conditions and the overall
professionalism of the staff really make it a first class environment. We have
a lot of momentum right now, our group is very talented and extremely hard
working. It will be fun for us to see some familiar faces but also to compete
against a couple different programs we don’t see very often.”
A total of 11 teams will compete on the par-72, 6,112-yard
course at the Classic Club. The first two rounds will commence on Saturday with
an 8:30 a.m. MT shotgun start, with Sunday’s final round beginning at the same
time.
The Cowgirls are coming off a fourth-place tie at the
Nebraska Chip-N Club in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 25-27. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Hankins led UW and earned her first top-ten finish. She recorded a 221 (+5) to
tie for eighth, while junior Gabrielle Gibson tied for 16th with a 225 (+7). Freshman Erin Sargent joined Gibson in the top-25, and recorded a three-day total of 229
(+13), as senior Mackenzie Barrie finished with a 232 (+16). Junior Klara Castillo closed out the tournament strong with a 233 (+17), while sophomore
Megan Knadler recorded a 237 (+21).
Hankins, Gibson, Sargent, Barrie, Knadler will be UW’s
starting five this weekend. Castillo and senior Taylor Dorans will play as
individuals.
During last year’s tournament at the Classic Club, the
Cowgirls finished tied for seventh in the 14-team field. Megan Knadler claimed
her first top-ten finish wearing the Brown and Gold, as she totaled a 225 (+8)
and tied for eighth. Castillo and Gibson each finished among the top-25 with a
231 (+15), while Dorans shot a 244 (+28) and Barrie had a 257 (+41).
