The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team will begin its
2016-17 season on Monday at the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. The 54-hole, two-day
tournament will be hosted by Colorado State at the Ptarmigan Country Club in
Fort Collins, Colo.
UW welcomes two freshmen to this year’s team, as Erin Sargent and Caitlyn Skavdahl are set to join the Cowgirls. Wyoming has nine
returners for the upcoming season. Mackenzie Barrie and Taylor Dorans are the only
two seniors for the Cowgirls, as juniors Klara Castillo and Gabrielle Gibson are joined by sophomore’s Megan and Kaylee Knadler, as well as Amanda Hinchey, Michelle Romano and Sarah Hankins.
“We welcome back a significant amount of returners,” Cowgirl
head coach Josey Stender said. “This group has higher expectations than how we
played last fall, and that helps with the depth we have and also how we will be
playing a number of familiar courses. Like always, I’ll rely heavily on the
older and more experienced players but there are a few younger players that
will find themselves in the lineup every week.”
Of the Cowgirls that are returning, four competed in the
tournament a year ago. Gibson was Wyoming’s top finisher in Fort Collins last
year. She recorded a 235 (+19), while Megan Knadler shot a 238 (+22), Kaylee
Knadler had a score of 239 (+23) and Barrie recorded a three-round scorecard of
244 (+28).
To close out the 2016 spring season at the 2016 Mountain
West Championships, UW was led by Kaylee Knadler. She posted a 236 (+20) for
35th place, while Castillo had a three-round total of 241 (+25). Gibson tied
for 40th with a 242 (+26) and Megan Knadler posted a 245 (+29).
The Cowgirls’ fall schedule features four events. UW will
host the sixth annual Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Oct. 1-2, at
the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Wyoming will also participate in the
Nebraska Chip N’ Club in Lincoln, Neb., and close out the fall season with the
Denver Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Oct., 7-9.
