LARAMIE, Wyo. – Cowgirl soccer took the field Sunday
morning at Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex for its Brown versus Gold scrimmage,
where a late penalty conversion from junior defender Alisha Bass sealed the 3-1
win for the Gold team.
After a
scoreless opening half, junior forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes opened the scoring to
give the Brown squad the lead. Freshman forward Michaela Stark answered less
than a minute later to even the score at 1-1.
The Brown team
outshot the Gold team 11-8, but the Gold team capitalized on their chances. Ten
minutes after Stark’s equalizer, senior midfielder Mandy Meyer gathered a
clearance at the top of the box and buried a shot to the right upper-90 to put
the Gold team on top. Bass’s penalty kick with less than five minutes left in
the contest put the game out of reach for the Brown team.
“I thought it
went really well," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "Obviously we were trying some people in certain spots to see
what they’ve got and trying some new players to see what they have. I’m happy
with the level of intensity throughout the game, it’s nice to get some goals on
the board. I thought the intensity was high from start to finish, and it should
be given the number of seniors on the team.”
The Cowgirls
will travel to Hastings, Nebraska, on Friday, August 12 for an exhibition
contest against the South Dakota Coyotes. Kick-off is at 6 p.m. and fans can
