The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will
welcome North Dakota State for its home opener on Monday evening. The match is
set to begin at 6 p.m. MT, and will take place in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
After opening the 2016 season at the Purdue Mortar Board
Premier, Wyoming is set to host the Bison for the first time since 2004. NDSU
is 0-3 on the season, with losses against No. 25 Colorado State and Northern
Colorado. They had an early afternoon contest today with St. Mary’s, and fell
in four sets in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Cowgirls return to Laramie in search of their first win
of the 2016 season, after an 0-3 start at the Purdue Mortar Board Premier this
past weekend. UW fell to No. 20 Purdue and No. 24 Kentucky in straight sets,
before another hard fought match and four-set loss against Washington State.
UW averaged 10.50 kills per set during the opening weekend
with senior Kayla Slofkiss (2.30) and sophomore Emily Lewis (2.30) leading the
way. Junior Lily Austin recorded 42 digs (4.20 p/s) throughout the weekend. She
was the lone representative for Wyoming to be named to the All-Tournament team.
Senior Courtney Chacon posted up 68 assists during play, for an average of 6.80
per set.
NDSU was picked to finish second in the Summit League
coaches preseason poll. The Bison only lost one starter from a year ago, and
return two all-league honorable mention honorees in Emily Minnick and Emily
Miron. Minnick and Miron finished second and third, respectively, for the Bison
in both kills and kills per set in 2015.
The Bison are led by senior outside hitter Hadley Steffen
with 30 kills, and senior middle blocker Emily Minnick with 28. Junior setter Brianna
Rasmusson has 82 total assists and an average of 6.83 per set. Defensively, senior
defensive specialist Emily Milligan has a team-high 37 digs, while Minnick and
Miron each have eight blocks for NDSU.
