LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming soccer will travel to Pocatello,
Idaho for its first road contest of the 2016 season against the Idaho State
Bengals on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. MT from Davis Field.
Wyoming looks to
build on a positive result in its first outing of the 2016 campaign, a 2-0 win
over Houston Baptist. The Cowgirls dominated possession and pressured the
Huskies’ back line all game, evidenced by the team’s 20 shots and 11 shots on
goal. Wyoming also earned 10 corners and prevented the visitors from making a
single trip to the corner flag. The Cowgirls also held the Huskies to just two
shots, one on goal, and junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree came up with the
save.
The Cowgirls were one
of four Mountain West teams to shut out their opponent in their season-opening
match. They were one of five teams to net multiple goals, and tied with UNLV
for the most shots (20). Wyoming also played a clean game defensively,
committing the third-fewest fouls (6) among MW teams.
Wyoming is 1-1-2 in road
openers under head coach Pete Cuadrado, most recently playing Montana to a
scoreless draw last season in Missoula. Tuesday marks the ninth meeting
all-time between the Cowgirls and the Bengals. Wyoming leads the series, 4-3-1,
after defeating Idaho State by a score of 3-0 last season.
“This will be a good
road test,” said Cuadrado. “Idaho State is a much-improved team from last year.”
Idaho State is 1-1-0
on the year after earning its first win of 2016 against a familiar foe on
Sunday. The Bengals bested Houston Baptist, 4-2, at home in a game that saw the
Bengals tally 30 shots. The Huskies struck first in the 27th minute, but Idaho
State answered with two goals before halftime. After Houston Baptist equalized
in the 73rd minute, the Bengals put up two more goals in a three-minute span to
secure the victory.
The Bengals’ offense
is led by freshman forwards Michaela Didericksen and Brooke Kortekaas, who each
have two goals on the year. Freshman midfielder Jazmin Lopez leads the team in
assists with two. Idaho State is 0-1 this season against MW foes after falling
at Boise State, 2-1, in its season-opener.
