LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming soccer will kick off its 2016
regular season against the Houston Baptist Huskies on Friday, at 5 p.m. MT at
the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
Wyoming enters the
2016 season with high expectations after a fourth-place conference finish a
season ago, as well as a fourth-place ranking in the Mountain West Preseason
Coaches’ Poll released on Aug. 10. The Cowgirls return all 11 starters from
last year, including leading scorer, junior forward Shaina Ashouri. Notching
nine goals and seven assists on the season, Ashouri garnered First Team
All-Mountain West and Third Team All-Pacific Region honors. The 2014 MW
Freshman of the Year, as well as Offensive Player of the Year, junior forward
Kaitlyn Lomsnes, also looks to make an impact offensively. The Cowgirls are 2-2-0
in home-openers under head coach Pete Cuadrado, most recently earning a 1-0 win
over Morehead State last season. Wyoming is facing off against Houston Baptist
for the first time in program history.
“I think Houston
Baptist is a solid team, especially for our first game out,” said Cuadrado. “We’re
looking to clean up some of the things we saw during the South Dakota game. I
thought we did a good job of creating opportunities. The next step is putting
them in the back of the net.”
Nine of 11 starters
and 19 total letterwinners return from Houston Baptist’s 2015 team, which
finished 10-6-1 overall and second in the Southland Conference with an 8-3-0
record. Sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer earned pre-season First Team
all-conference honors after leading the Huskies in goals (9), points (21),
shots (42), shots on goal (23) and game-winning goals (6) last season. Houston
Baptist was picked to finish fifth in the conference by Southland’s pre-season
coaches’ poll. The Huskies fell to Baylor, 3-0, last Saturday in their only
exhibition match of 2016.
