Hastings, Neb. – Continuing a trend from last season, the
Wyoming Cowgirls locked down the South Dakota Coyotes on defense, and came away
with the 1-0 shutout victory on Friday night at Lloyd Wilson Field.
Wyoming outshot South Dakota 9-6
and earned 12 corner kicks to the Coyotes' zero, but struggled to capitalize on
their opportunities. However, an early goal from senior forward Anne Hinman
proved to be the difference in the contest after holding South Dakota scoreless
for 90 minutes.
"It's good to get a win, but I
didn't think we played that well," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "We made too
many simple mistakes that I think we have to clean up. It's a preseason game,
but at the end of the day we just need to be cleaner. We had a couple very good
opportunities that if you don't finish going forward, we're going to get burned
by that. So we have to put some of those chances in the back of the net."
Eight different Cowgirls tallied
shots in Friday's match. Freshman forward Michaela Stark led the way with two
attempts, putting both on frame. Senior forward Corey Strang of South Dakota
led all players with three shots.
The Cowgirls will begin the 2016
campaign with their home-opener on Friday, Aug. 19, against Houston Baptist.
Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m.
