Three University of Wyoming
Cowgirl golfers have been named All-American Scholars by the Women’s Golf
Coaches Association (WGCA) that was announced Tuesday. Senior’s Kathleen Kershisnik and Emily Woodard were joined by sophomore Klara Castillo on the
WGCA All-American team. Kershisnik became the first four-time honoree for
Wyoming. Woodard was honored for the third-consecutive year, as Castillo was
honored for the first time.
This marks the second-straight
year that three different Cowgirls have been All-American’s in the same year. Kershisnik,
Woodard and Sarah Hankins achieved the feat last season, as Mikala Henzlik,
Kaelee Aegerter and Laura Mengelkamp were named All-American scholars during
the 2007 season.
“This is a tremendous, well deserved honor for Emily,
Kathleen and Klara,” Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. “Both Kathleen and
Emily are in rare company ranking in the top few percent in all of women’s
college golf for earning All-American Scholar the number of years that they
have. These ladies represent all that we strive for in the classroom and
on the golf course within our program. I couldn’t be more proud of them
and happy for them to accomplish their goals.”
Kershisnik, the first four-time winner for the Cowgirls and a
native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., received her degree in kinesiology UW this
past spring and has been selected to the Mountain West Academic All-Conference
Team twice. On the course this past season, she averaged 78.6 strokes per
round.
A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., Woodard majored in chemistry at
UW and completed her final season with the Cowgirls this past spring. Woodard closed
out her career at the Bobcat Spring Invite, where she posted her season-low 74
(+2) to open the tournament and finished with a 234 (+18). She had an 80.7
stroke average during her senior campaign.
A native of Albuquerque, N.M ., Castillo is majoring in criminal
justice at UW. On the course, she averaged 78.2 strokes per round this past
year. She had her first top-five finish at the Bobcat Spring Invite, as she
tied for fifth with a 222 (+6). Castillo closed out the season at the MW
Championship, where she finished second on the team and tied for 38th with a
three-day total 241 (+25).
The Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American
Scholars were announced with a total of 830 women’s collegiate golfers
recognized with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the
All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college
athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
