Wyoming golfer Ryan Wallen has been named a Cleveland
Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for the 2015-16 season. He is the 11th Cowboy
to earn the honor and first to do so since Eric Parish in 2013.
“This is a great achievement for Ryan,” UW head coach Joe
Jensen said. “He was one of our leaders all year. With the type of season the
team had, he clearly excelled in the classroom as well. Ryan is the type of
young man we want in our program and has continued to improve each year.”
Wallen was
one of 212 Division I student-athletes across the country to be named a scholar
athlete. To qualify, an individual must be a junior or
senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate
level, participate in 50-percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a
stroke-average under 76.0, in addition to maintaining a cumulative grade-point
average of 3.2.
Wallen, a
native of Blaine, Wash., was the men’s Mountain West Golfer of the Week on
April 6. He became the first Poke to achieve the feat since David Hearn in
2000. He played in all 33 rounds during his junior season and finished second
on the team with a 72.4 stroke average. He was the second-best finisher for UW
at the 2016 MW Championships, as he tied for 15th with a three-round total of
214 (-2). Wallen, studying business at UW, was also named to the 2016 Spring MW
Academic All-MW team and currently holds a 3.38 cumulative grade-point average.
