A Cowboy basketball reunion was held in Las Vegas as three former players
and two coaches participated in the NBA Summer League. Former UW head coach Larry Shyatt coached for the Dallas Mavericks. Former associate head coach Scott Duncan was a member of the Phoenix Suns Staff. Duncan was joined on the
Suns by forward Derek Cooke Jr., as forward Larry Nance Jr. played in his
second summer league with the Los Angeles Lakers and guard Josh Adams made his professional
debut with the Denver Nuggets.
Adams and the Nuggets met up with the Suns in the quarterfinals of the
tournament for the only matchup that pitted former UW teammates together. The
group reunited one evening for dinner to talk about their time in the Brown and
Gold.
“I was so proud of our guys and I thought that everyone played very well,”
Shyatt said. “The highlight was when Larry (Nance Jr.) contacted all of us and
we went out for dinner with the stories going on and on. It was very special
for all of us.”
Nance Jr. had an outstanding week for the Lakers before finishing the Summer
League with an injury. He averaged nine points and nearly eight rebounds per
contest. He ranked 10th amongst
all players in the league in rebounds. He also ranked fourth in steals per game
at 2.8 and eighth in blocks per game at 1.8. In his final contest against the
Cleveland Cavaliers, he recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10
rebounds.
Adams played in four contests during the Summer League averaging 4.4 points
per game and 2.2 rebounds to go along with 1.2 assists. He recorded seven
points and four rebounds in his Summer League debut against the Memphis
Grizzles.
Cooke Jr. played in three games for the Suns. He averaged two points and two
rebounds per game helping Phoenix to the semifinals of the tournament. In the
quarterfinals against the Nuggets, he recorded six points, while he also
grabbed three rebounds in 12 minutes of action.
