A school record in the distance medley relay highlighted an all-around good start for the University of Wyoming on Thursday at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Cowgirl DMR smashed the previous school record by 25 seconds and sophomore Clare Nicolas posted the seventh-best pentathlon in Wyoming history at the Albuquerque Convention Center. With two events scored, the Cowgirls are sixth with six points and the Cowboys are fifth with four.

"I felt like our multi-events started the meet well for us today and then the women's DMR was a tremendous performance," UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. "All four Cowgirls ran great times and competed well. It was extremely important to get off to a good start and our kids did that today. Hopefully we can carry that momentum into tomorrow, because we need those kids to qualify through to Saturday's finals."

Sophomores Lauren Hamilton and Kim Robertson combined with juniors Cassidy Meade and Audra DeStefano to finish third in Thursday's distance medley at 11:31.66 to better the previous record of 11:56.19. Meade and Robertson were also members of the previous school record that was notched at last year's MW indoor meet. The top five teams in Thursday's race also bested the previous meet record. Wyoming's DMR on the men's side of sophomores Calum Kepler, Isaac Kiefer, Jonah Henry and freshman Phillip Thomas claimed fifth in 10:16.76, just eight seconds off UW's all-time top 10.

In the multi-events, Nicolas racked up 3,205 points for seventh in cowgirl history and 15th in Thursday's field. In just her second collegiate pentathlon, she posted personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.68, the high jump at 4-9 3/4, the shot put at 33-10 and the 800 meters at 2:32. Career marks in four of the five events helped her improve her personal-best score by 228 points.

In the heptathlon, junior Caleb Seeton sits fourth through the first four events with 2,798 points and is just 94 points shy of second. He notched a personal-best leap of 21-5 1/2 in the long jump and a personal-best throw of 40-9 in the shot put. Senior Wyatt Mirich is ninth with 2,567 points, just 171 points away from the four competitors in front of him.

The heptathlon concludes tomorrow at 11 a.m. MT with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters. Field events commence at 12:30 p.m. and running events at 1:30 p.m.
