Grand Canyon Invite - Day 3
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team finished fifth at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Wednesday for their best team finish in event since 2012. The Cowgirls shot a season-low 300 (+12) in the final round to finish at 917 (+53) in the 21-team event. Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie led the Cowgirls with a career-best seventh place finish.
"I was really proud of the girls and it was definitely a team effort," head coach Josey Stender said. "Everyone contributed on a difficult golf course and we really found consistency this week."
Barrie became the first Cowgirl since Samantha Stancato in 2010 to finish in the top-10 of an event. Barrie seventh place finish was due to a solid final round of 74 (+2). She finished with a three-round tally of 224 (+8). Sophomore Taylor Dorans finished tied for 15th at 227 (+11), as it was a career-best finish. She tallied a 227 (+11) for the tournament.
"Mackenzie is such a steady and tough athlete and back-to-back tournament leading the team is great to see," Stedner said. "To have career-best finishes for two young players is so encouraging."
Stancato closed out the tournament with a 76 (+4). She finished tied for 34th at 233 (+17). Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson ended play at 234 (+18) after a final round score of 77 (+5). Junior Kathleen Kershisnik ended the tournament in 53rd place with a total score of 237 (+21).
Junior Emily Woodard, who is playing as an individual, finished tied for 61st after shooting 239 (+23). She shot 79 (+7) in the final round. Freshman Klara Castillo finished tied for 93rd with a tally of 248 (+32). Fellow freshman Sarah Hankins ended play at 255 (+39), finishing tied for 101st.
"To finish were we did is great motivation for the rest of the season," Stender said.
UC Riverside won the team title with a tally of 895 (+31). Grand Canyon's Charlotte Jaengkit won the individual medalist honors with a tally of 217 (+1).
The Cowgirls return to action BYU at Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah on March 16-17.
