The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opened up play at the Denver University Ron Moore Intercollegiate Friday recording an opening round tally of 316 (+28). Junior Kathleen Kershisnik led the Cowgirls shooting a 76 (+4) on
the par-72, 6,427-yard Highlands Ranch Golf Club. The Cowgirls are in 10th place in the 12-team field after the first 18 holes.
"We got off to a slow start today trying to adjust to the course," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We will be more comfortable with the greens and length of the course tomorrow."
Kershisnik, a native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., recorded 12 pars and one birdie in the opening round, as she stands tied for 22nd place in the 75-golfer field. Sophomore Taylor Dorans carded a 78 (+6), as she sits tied for 38th place. Fellow sophomore Mackenzie Barrie is tied for 47th place after an opening round of 80 (+8).
"It was great to see Kathleen play so well on familiar ground for her," Stender said.
Senior Samantha Stancato and redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson turned in scorecards of 81 (+9), as they sit tied for 56th place. Freshman Klara Castillo, playing as an individual, finished with a round of 79 (+7), as she is tied for 38th place. Freshman Sarah Hankins, also playing in an individual spot is tied for 68th place after finishing the first round with a tally of 83 (+11).
Kanas holds the top spot after the first day with a tally of 289 (+1). The Jayhawk's Pornvipa Sakdee and Kansas State's Connie Jaffrey are tied for the individual lead at 71 (-1).
The Cowgirls continue action at the Denver University Ron Moore Invitational tomorrow morning.
