Cowboy Golf Set for 2014 Mountain West Championship

The University of Wyoming men's golf team will begin the 2014 Mountain West Championship on Friday at the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort in Tucson, Ariz. For the eighth consecutive year, the Catalina Course will be home to the MW men's golf championship. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday and feature all eleven teams from the Mountain West.

Earlier this year, the Cowboys played the Catalina Course during the Arizona NIT. The Pokes placed 14th after recording a 916 (+52). The Pokes tied for seventh at last year's MW Championship with a total tally of 897 (+45). Senior Eric Parish will be playing in his third championship for Wyoming, while senior's Brent Baylon and Eddie Stewart and sophomore Kamrin Allen will all be playing in their second.

Leading the Cowboys is Baylon, who returns to Omni Tucson National after a top-25 finish at the 2013 MW Championship. Baylon fired a 223 (+10) a year ago, as Stewart shot 228 (+12) and Allen recorded a 238 (+25). Stewart carries the best stroke average for the Cowboys into this year's championship with 74.3. His 218 (+8) at the Cowboy Classic was his best score of the spring. Allen and Baylon are close behind Stewart for second with a 74.4 scoring average.  Allen led UW at the Cowboy Classic and also recorded his best finish of the spring with a 216 (+6). Freshman Ryan Wallen has been playing steady golf and has continued to improve throughout this spring. He has a scoring average of 76.5 and fired his best three-round score of the spring at the Cowboy Classic with a 220 (+10).  Parish will round out the lineup for the Pokes. He has a scoring average of 76.4 and shot a 236 (+26) during Wyoming's last tournament at the Cowboy Classic.

The 2014 MW Championship field features three teams in the top-40 of the Golfweek Rankings. New Mexico leads the way ranked No. 23 in the country, followed by UNLV at No. 29, while San Diego State is ranked No. 38.

The Cowboys will be paired in the first round with Boise State and Utah State. The championship tee times will begin at 8 a.m. MT and Wyoming, Boise State and Utah State will be the final five groups to tee off from 10:30 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. MT.
