After strong finishes over the weekend at the MW Championships, how do you feel following your first year on the track team?
After the MW Championships I am so excited for next year. I can't wait to see how much we will improve as a team, and I'm excited to see the freshmen we have coming in as well. I definitely would have loved to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries, but I didn't which I wasn't too happy about, but I will improve and I will make it in my next three years at the university.
How did it feel to break UW's school record in the 100-meter dash a few weeks ago at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins? What was your reaction when you found out the 11.68 had broken the school record?
After I broke the school record I was really excited, but honestly I didn't even know I did until my dad showed me that I did. I was just happy I ran an 11.68; honestly, I forgot what the record was.
How is Coach Meinecke helping you as a sprinter?
Coach Meinecke has helped me tremendously as a sprinter. He has taught me how to be more explosive out of the blocks and how to drive out of the blocks. I am so glad I am able to have a coach tell me what I need to work on to get better. I love how straightforward he is with me, as well. If I do something wrong, he tells me, and if he doesn't think I'm working hard enough, he tells me, and I love that.
Being a native of Wyoming from nearby Rawlins, what does it mean for you to represent Wyoming in track competitions all over the country?
I was born and raised in Louisiana but I moved to Rawlins the summer going into eighth grade. Honestly, my first year here was rough! As the years went on I guess Wyoming grew on me, but not enough for me to want to go to the University of Wyoming. I am extremely honored to be representing Wyoming all over the country, and I am definitely honored to be a positive role model for people in Rawlins. I am very happy I decided to come to the university.
You came from a large family with eight siblings and both of your parents played sports in college. Was sports a common theme in your household growing up, or did everyone do as they pleased? Do you have a favorite memory growing up playing sports with your siblings?
Actually I have four sisters on my mother's side and two sisters and two brothers on my daddy's and stepmom's side. My biological parents aren't together. I grew up in Louisiana until I was 14 years old, and I remember doing track with my older sister in Louisiana until she quit, but I kept going and decided that I didn't like it so I quit.
How have you adjusted to college following high school, both academically and athletically?
I feel like I have adjusted very well to college both academically and athletically; I am the type of person who likes a challenge and I have enjoyed my first year of college.
What are your career plans with a degree in anthropology?
I would like to go to law school with my anthropology degree.
As it's been a busy adjustment to college between school and track, what do you enjoy doing with any free time you have?
Second semester was a little harder than first semester because we traveled a lot so I missed school, but I stilled ended the year with a good GPA. I love to hang out with my friends and relax, which means sleep.
When did you decide to focus on track over other sports?
I decided to focus on track over other sports my junior year because I realized I was really good at it and I love running.
