The 21st ranked doubles team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova advanced to the quarterfinals of Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, on Thursday, in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"In the first match of the day, the ladies were focused and played a solid match the entire way," said assistant coach Ewa Szatkowska. "We knew coming into the second match of the day that Pepperdine would come out strong. It was a tight match, but they battled the entire way and managed to pull out the victory."
In the main draw of doubles, Popovici and Synkova had a strong showing in their opening match. They defeated Katie Vasenina and Loreto Alonso Martinez of South Florida, 8-4. The second match featured the seventh ranked team of Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine. It was a battle but they pulled out the 8-6 win to advance to the next round.
The duo will play the 19th ranked team of Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar of Duke tomorrow.
